When to see a dermatologist

See a doctor or dermatologist promptly if you notice any of these:

• A mole or spot that is changing in size, shape or colour.
• A sore that doesn't heal within 4–6 weeks.
• A spot that bleeds, itches, crusts or is tender for no clear reason.
• A new dark streak under a finger- or toenail.
• A mole that looks different from all your others.
• Any spot you're simply worried about.

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading warm redness with fever, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the lips or tongue or trouble breathing.

Early melanoma is highly treatable, so getting checked early can be lifesaving — and most spots turn out to be harmless, which is worth the peace of mind.
