AI skin screening

FAQ

Straight answers about how Naevus works.

Is it really free?

Yes. Naevus is a non-profit project — no fees, no ads, no upsells.

How accurate is it?

On unseen clinical and phone photos the model reaches about 0.80 AUC. That's helpful for triage but imperfect — it can miss cancers and flag harmless spots. It is a screening aid, not a diagnosis.

Can it replace a dermatologist?

No. Nothing here replaces a professional exam. Use it to decide when to get checked, and always see a doctor for anything concerning.

Is my data private?

Your account and photos are stored securely for your mole tracker. You consent on sign-up, can delete everything anytime, and we never sell your data. The quick check needs no account.

What photos work best?

Good, even lighting; in focus; the spot centred and filling the frame. The app will warn you if a photo looks too dark, blurry, or unclear.

Does it work for all skin tones?

It's designed to work across skin tones, but validation on diverse skin is still limited — another reason to see a doctor for anything worrying, whatever your skin tone.
